The Visual Arts Brampton Creative Studios
offers programming six days a week, formal and informal workshops,
free community exhibits in four locations, an art collection for
sale, and events.
Visual Arts Brampton was founded in 1986, and currently serves
members from Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, Etobicoke, Oakville,
and Don Mills. Beyond these communities, the youth classes include
students from Milton and Campbellville. VAB is a member of the
Brampton Arts Council, an umbrella group for the local arts community.
STUDIO PROGRAMMING Most weeks, Visual Arts Brampton's
studio hosts seven adult time slots and five youth time slots.
Open studios are run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday in
the daytime, Saturday afternoons, and Thursday evenings. Models
are brought into the studio for Wednesday daytime portrait
sessions, and Tuesday evening life
drawing sessions. Each Saturday, five youth
sessions are held, for children aged 6 to 18.
EXHIBITIONS VAB Studio is host to the Big Folio Gallery,
a collection of 100s of original painting, drawing, and printmaking
artwork by local artists. All are available to purchase on the
spot. Across the road at Artway Gallery,
monthly exhibits feature creativity by an array of local talent.
Fridge Front Gallery features artwork by youth from the community,
while World Art Gallery features miniature works by creatives
from around the world.
FUNDING Visual Arts Brampton is proud to be primarily
self-dependant. For the most part, the group runs programming
is extremely affordable, while making enough profit to keep the
group financially stable. As outlined in a letter to the Brampton
Arts Council, 5 March 1986, the group promised to "keep tight
financial reigns on our finances".
Three times in its history, VAB has received grants from the
provincial government for special projects. The three projects
funded have been a Lottario matching grant for printmaking equipment
and supplies (1992); Trillium Foundation grant for digital art
computers (2003); and Trillium grant for newer systems and digital
workshop production (2008).
